Cyprus's Electricity Price Soared and Turned to Solar Panels

In order to ease the pressure of soaring electricity, the Cyprus government has continuously increased subsidies for household photovoltaic power generation and house insulation transformation this year, and the subsidies for home installation of solar panels have almost doubled. Cyprus officials have recently said that the government's measures to reduce power costs have been actively responding to the public, and home power consumption is accelerating to solar energy.

The Cyprus Power Bureau official, Timerz Nasanar, told a reporter from Xinhua News Agency that the Cyprus government announced a new plan to respond to climate change and reduce the power cost action plan at the end of May. As an approval agency, the Cyprus Electric Power Bureau received 2260 applications a week after the plan was implemented. At present, the monthly application volume is maintained at about 1,000 copies, which is much higher than 400 per month in 2020 and 2021.

The Sai Statistics Bureau said earlier this month that the prices of electric, petroleum and petroleum products have risen sharply since the upgrading of the Ukraine crisis. The Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry has raised the budget of the original subsidy plan by 40%. For families with a plan to obtain a house construction planning permit and apply for a photovoltaic solar panel before January 1, 2017, a 375 euro subsidy is given per kilowatt solar optical light installation machine. In addition, the subsidy quota of mountain families increased by 50%in the aforementioned standards, and the subsidy standards for difficult families increased to 1,000 euros per kilowatt.

When talking about the approval cycle, Nasanar said that due to the large number of applicants, the staff of the Electric Power Bureau had to work overtime on weekends, but even so some applicants had to wait for several months to get approved.

"I was told that I was able to check my application in two or three months." The applicant Micharis Maras told reporters that he had the idea of installing solar panels before. However, the energy crisis and the government's increase in subsidies prompted him to make this decision. He predicts that after installing solar panels, the electricity bills every two months will be reduced from 430 euros to about 180 euros. Coupled with government subsidies, costs are expected to recover costs within five years.

The goal of the Department of Energy of Cyprus is that by 2030, nearly half of Cyprus's families have solar panels. Cyprus has a population of about 1 million, and the sunny days are more than 300 days each year.
