Scientists at the Helmholtz Center Berlin (HZB) in Germany have announced that they have produced a perovskite/silicon tandem solar cell with an efficiency of 32.5%, a new world record efficiency!
It is reported that this record has been certified by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) of the US Department of Energy.
Perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells are also called perovskite/crystalline silicon stacked cells and perovskite-silicon stacked cells, which are a combination of perovskite cells and traditional silicon-based solar cell technologies. In simple terms, it refers to connecting the perovskite cells in series on the surface of the crystalline silicon cells. In this way, perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells have the strengths of fused crystalline silicon and thin-film cells and through the combined advantages, broaden the absorption spectrum and obtain higher photoelectric conversion efficiency than single crystal silicon cells or perovskite cells.
EcoMat studies have shown that the theoretical efficiency limit of perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells is 46%, which is much higher than traditional crystalline silicon cells. In terms of theoretical limit conversion efficiency, the limit efficiencies of HJT, TOPCon and perovskite single-layer cells are 27.5%, 28.7% and 31%, respectively.
